The Physician 70% Resurfacing Gel Peel and Esthetician 40% Resurfacing Gel Exfoliator Systems are highly concentrated forms of glycolic acid that can greatly assist in accelerating the home care results achieved with the Jan Marini Skin Care Management System.

Glycolic acid peels are medically endorsed as a viable alternative to more invasive peels for the patient who wishes to avoid discomfort and/or a recovery period. Traditional chemical peels are designed to create a controlled wounding or burning of the skin. The depth of the wound or burn is determined by the physician and how deep they wish to penetrate in order to create the desired effect. Depending on the extent of the burn, recovery can vary from a few days to two weeks. With very deep peels, healing may take many months.

While resurfacing procedures do not replace deeper peels, they can produce dramatic results. Instead of a controlled wounding, glycolic acid dissolves a "glue-like" or "mortar-like" substance in the stratum corneum that contributes to what is called increased corneocyte cohesion, allowing dead thickened layers to lift away without wounding the skin. Increased corneocyte cohesion produces skin that appears dull, thickened and coarse. This process also plays a pivotal role in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

When the glycolic acid enables layers to separate from the stratum corneum, the skin appears noticeably smoother, softer and firmer. As the series continues, along with the home care program, the cumulative action becomes greater and greater. Medical studies show that this cumulative result includes the encouragement of collagen as well as the encouragement of substances called glycosaminoglycans, known to give the skin "epidermal volume", thus substantially increasing firmness and lessening the appearance of deeper lines.

Jan Marini has also perfected an advanced prepping solution by combining salicylic acid and glycolic acid. This duo provides more thorough degreasing and lifting. It also enables customization of the resurfacing procedure so that intensity can be increased or decreased as necessary.
